Day 1: Campobello Island in Canada, and Lubec, Maine


We stayed in Lubec, Maine at a the Home Port Inn B&B with a sweet owner: Suzannah Gale. 

The first day we went to Canada, to an island called Campobello 
and ended the day at this lighthouse. 


See Campobello on the right side of this map. Lubec is on the left side of the bridge.



While we were at the first lighthouse closest to the bridge on Campobello, watching the seals feeding while the tide was coming in (5 feet an hour!), I got this bald eagle picture by chance. 
I thought it was a seagull until I enlarged this picture on my camera later. 
The building at the top of the picture is in Lubec.





Below is Raccoon Beach. 
We were the only people on it for the time we spent there...walking, taking pictures, and enjoying the rocks (that I resisted taking home with me, the photos and memories are all I took.) 







We hiked the cliff top trail from Raccoon Beach to Liberty Point on Campobello Island. 
We walked back on the road...over 5 mile loop. 

The picture below is the point you get to from a side trail out to see the Sunsweep Sculpture...a friendship project (3 parts are on the US/Canada borders across the continent).



The ocean swells made me feel very small and insignificant.


At the far end of Campobello, we got to walk out to the lighthouse there while the tide was out. 
There was a bridge across one rocky part, but two areas we crossed were reached by steep stairs. Here is Phil at the base of one set of stairs.

It was threatening rain and foggy as we did the two loops and trail over the ridge and down to the base. The top ridge area was covered in these colors and textures. So pretty. The beach we visited after the hike is below.  It started to pour while we were there. We enjoyed it anyway. We found stacked rocks in many places on this trip. We added two to this one: Colorful seaweed: Tide out marshes in the rain: Pouring rain on deck in restaurant in Lubec: Last meal spot (later that day, we missed dinner as all the restaurants closed at 8 and we went out too late...not knowing that "after Labor Day" in a small town, this is what you can expect).

Day 2: Quoddy Head beach, hike to Western Head

After checking out the Quoddy Head lighthouse, we walked down and stayed on the beach there for hours. I discovered tidal pools while the tide was out.  This little guy was eating beside the path on the way down to the beach (a red squirrel, much smaller than grey ones we are used to): Our B&B host suggested the hike to  Western Head , below Cutler and around the Little River.  We were alone the whole time on that hike (3 hours or so).  The trail was very pretty and moss covered, including the trees.  The board walk was well maintained and covered with chicken wire to prevent slipping. I loved this collaborative sculpture we found on one beach we passed.  Folks had picked and added rocks to the large tree's root system. We also added one each and placed them nestled together.
